Winged Eyeliner for Hooded Eyes

I have always been stumped on how to create winged liner on my eyes. I tried gel liners, pencils, liquids with no success. My attempts all ended with sad looking, droopy eyes or the liner would transfer & crease on my lid so I gave up years ago. I just thought my eye shape just couldn’t pull off the look. That is, until Birchbox posted this amazing article in April: 3 Eye-Opening Tutorials for Hooded Lids.

Halleluiah! If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I figured out several months ago tricks to keep shadows from creasing. Using those tips and the video below, that was linked in the Birchbox article, I have one successful attempt at perfecting a winged liner on my hooded eyes!

Products I used for this look:
Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer (applied all over my lid with a brush)
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in dark brown (applied along lash line)
Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio – Sepia (used for the wing, applied with a small brush)

Deviations from the tutorial:
Since this was my first attempt, I went with Sam’s advice to sketch on your lid where you want your wing with eye shadow first. I used the darkest shade in the Smashbox Sepia trio. I was happy enough with the look with only the shadow that I did not fill in the wing with liner. Plus, I was meeting friends out that night so I didn’t want to deal with liner transfer or liner disintegrating while at a bar.

Looks drastic right?

The wings do not look as drastic when my eyes are open. A friend snapped this picture while I was looking pensive.

At the end of the night, no transfer! Hooray!

For my next attempt, I may be brave enough to fill it in with liner and I’ll be sure to share the results! Also, note to self, remember to get better pictures next time! Thank you Birchbox & Sam for showing me it is possible to create winged liner on hooded lids!

Hooray! Do you have hooded eyes? What techniques do you use to make them pop?

  1. I think I need to go look at those links, I’ve never had any luck with winged eyeliner so will be trying those tips. I really like the look you did without the eyeliner, it’s still a nice winged look and fairly dramatic but not as dark.

    1. Thanks! You should check out the video – gives lots of details! I never would have tried this without watching that video (or having an eye shadow primer). Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions after watching the video!
